The Traeger Ironwood XL is designed for customers who like everything the standard Ironwood offers but regularly need more cooking space. Its 924 square inches of total cooking area gives you 308 square inches more room than the smaller Ironwood, making it better suited to large families, frequent entertaining, meal preparation, and cooks involving multiple briskets, pork shoulders, or racks of ribs.
That extra capacity comes from a wider 33-inch cooking chamber rather than adding unnecessary complexity. You still get two adjustable cooking levels, a large side shelf, and the same straightforward pellet-grill operation. The main grate provides enough width for larger cuts of meat to sit comfortably without having to play barbecue Tetris every time company arrives.
The Ironwood XL uses fully insulated dual-wall construction and Traeger’s Smart Combustion™ system to help manage cooking temperatures. This is especially useful for longer cooks and colder-weather use, where an uninsulated grill may work harder to recover heat. Its temperature range runs from 165°F to 500°F, covering low-and-slow smoking, roasting, baking, braising, and everyday grilling. Super Smoke® Mode can be used between 165°F and 225°F when you want to increase smoke flavour during the earlier stages of a cook.
The full-colour touchscreen controller is simple to navigate, while WiFIRE® connectivity lets you monitor temperatures and adjust compatible settings through the Traeger App. Two wired meat probes are included, and an integrated pellet sensor allows you to check the hopper level from your phone. These features do not cook the food for you, but they do mean fewer unnecessary trips outside to check whether the grill is still doing its job.
Cleanup is handled through Traeger’s EZ-Clean™ Grease & Ash Keg, which collects grease and pellet ash in one accessible container underneath the grill. You will still need to clean the cooking chamber and grates regularly—there is no magical self-cleaning smoker yet—but the design makes routine maintenance considerably less awkward. The P.A.L.® Pop-And-Lock rail and ModiFIRE® accessory system also let you add shelves, hooks, storage, and specialty cooking surfaces as needed.
The Ironwood XL is a strong choice for someone who wants premium temperature control and genuinely useful cooking capacity without paying for the induction cooktop, enclosed cabinet, and stainless-steel cooking grates found on the Timberline XL. For smaller households, the standard Ironwood may be plenty. For customers who regularly fill the grill, the XL’s additional width is worth having.
